MSU Denver’s Mechanical Engineering Technology degree will give you a solid foundation in the fundamentals of the discipline as well as considerable hands-on laboratory work to prepare you for a career in any number of industries, from large aerospace companies to small manufacturing and custom-design businesses.
The emphasis on application and implementation, which differs from the emphasis on theory and conceptual design of an engineering degree, will teach you how to solve problems by first applying engineering analysis and then designing a product that offers a new way to approach the solution.
The effectiveness of this two-pronged curriculum is evident in the water filter that Mechanical Engineering Technology students designed to help the survivors of the 7.8 earthquake in Nepal in 2015.
A more recent example of the innovation shown by MSU Denver Mechanical Engineering Technology students is the device that charges batteries while you’re riding a bicycle.
As a graduate of MSU Denver’s Mechanical Engineering Technology degree program, you may choose to take the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination, to begin the six-year process to become a registered professional engineer. The latter is often required for forensic (expert witness) consulting jobs or when the health and safety of the general public are involved.

The Mechanical Engineering Technology program, along with the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and the Electrical and Civil Engineering Technology, Industrial Design, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems disciplines are housed in this robust learning environment.
As a Mechanical Engineering Technology student, you will work with advanced technology in the AES Building’s experiential laboratories. In addition, York Space Systems, founded by former employees of Lockheed Martin, Ball Aerospace, NASA and Orbital ATK, house its production facilities and Mission Operations Center in the building, giving you the unique opportunity of working with the aerospace company’s team on the design, production and control of 150 to 200 satellites each year.
You will also benefit from four Engineering-related student groups, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers student chapter, as well as the Robotics Club.
As a Mechanical Engineering Technology student, you’ll have access to the finest advanced technology and experiential laboratories in MSU Denver’s new Aerospace and Engineering Sciences Building. Read about our recent Aerospace and Engineering Sciences Building opening.
You’ll also have the opportunity to work alongside aerospace professionals from York Space Systems, which houses its production facilities in the new building.
You can gain real-world experience during internships for local companies including Lockheed, Ball Aerospace and SwissLog, and you’ll design actual products for companies like these in your Senior Design course.
You can also take advantage of four active Engineering-related student groups including the student branch of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

According to the Bureau of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median salary for mechanical engineers in 2016 was $84,190. If you provide services to the public, you will need to earn a P.E. license.

Graduates of MSU Denver’s Mechanical Engineering Technology program are employed by Thompson Engineering, Seagate Technology, PCES, AMI Mechanical, Garmat USA, Northrop Grumman, FEMA and MIKRON, among others.
They have been accepted for post-graduate study at institutions such as the Colorado School of Mines, DeVry, Walden University, CU Boulder and Stevens Institute of Technology.
The Mechanical Engineering Technology is accredited by the ETAC Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and Program Criteria for Mechanical Engineering Technology and Similarly Named Programs.
